The latest AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater can be easily downloaded from Apple, but it needs the original AppleWorks, say Apple Works 6 or 6.2. What if your customer just wants to stick with 10.6.8? The earliest OS X version LibreOffice can supports is Lion 10.7, plus your customer loves AppleWorks. That's true! You can open it with LibreOffice and even better LibreOffice is free(check out previous post Free Microsoft Office alternatives). It's not a big deal to open those AppleWorks documents.
It's not perfect, but it keeps getting better.Some people might ask why bother? Well, it's not just because of good old memories like the Windows 95/98 or even before, there are rare cases that your customer has brought in a good iMac but still running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with heaps of old AppleWorks 6 documents. They've made great progress in Mac-ifying it. It's powerful, and has great support for Microsoft Office files.
I install it on friends' computers when I set them up, and I use it myself when I need something more heavy-duty than TextEdit. The only problem I have with it is that the interface is not as elegant as it might be (again, this is also true of AppleWorks, which hasn't really been updated since the days of OS 8), and it's slow to launch.Īll things considered, I give it the thumbs-up now. Better than X11, but just barely.īut that is no longer the case! They now use standard menus, and they're even using Aqua interface elements now. The menus were embedded in the document windows instead of in the menu bar, the scroll bars looked just like in Windows (except possibly uglier?), etc. For a while NeoOffice looked like it was running in a Windows emulator. There's a huge difference there, at least to me.
I used to say it wasn't a "true" Mac app myself, but I feel it has graduated from "cheap port" to "solid, if unpolished, Mac OS X program" (kind of like AppleWorks!).
